In the midst of chaotic situations, many people lost their lives because of the lack of correct information and timely decisions. In this study, the possibility of including risk reduction education in the middle-school science curriculum in Japan is explored. The research project is two-fold. In the first phase, the curriculum standards and middle-school science textbooks are examined to see how risk reduction education is included in the current middle school science. Based on the findings of\nthe current situation, a map for ideal risk reduction education is created in the second phase of  the project. A unit for “Ever-Changing Land” was developed and three lessons in the unit were implemented as mock lessons. The results indicate that the use of instructional strategies designed by the idea based on legitimate peripheral participation theory was effective to help students understand risk reduction as the self-motivated action. 内容記述 Japan experienced a large-scae earthquake followed by unprecedented tsunami on March 11, 2011. In the midst of chaotic situations, many people lost their lives because of the lack of correct information and timely decisions. In this study, the possibility of including risk reduction education in the middle-school science curriculum in Japan is explored. The research project is two-fold. In the first phase, the curriculum standards and middle-school science textbooks are examined to see how risk reduction education is included in the current middle school science. Based on the findings of
