The effect of vanadate on some parameters of renal function was studied on streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats with heminephrectomy. Rats were divided into four groups as follows: vanadate (v)-untreated normal rats, v-treated normal rats, v-untreated diabetic rats and v-treated diabetic rats. Oral administration of vanadate was started three weeks after the induction of diabetes and continued for a period of 10 weeks. The v-treated diabetic rats were characterized by significant (p\u003c0.001) decreases of blood glucose and of both albumin and IgG excretion rates after 8 weeks of study. There was no significant difference in the blood glucose and both albumin and IgG excretion rates between v-untreated normal rats and v-treated normal rats. The kidney wet weights of the v-untreated diabetic rats were significantly (p\u003c0.01) greater than those in the v-treated diabetic rats. However there was no significant difference in the body weight and creatinine clearance between the v-treated diabetic rats and the v-untreated diabetic rats.
