| 内容記述 | This paper examines the verb-modifying function of the Mongolian verb suffix -mar/-mer and finds first that the syntactic property of its modification of the verb is closer to that of converbs than adverbs. Four types of verbs can be modified by a verb with the suffix -mar/-mer: auxiliary verbs, thought verbs, manner verbs, and others including quotation and speech-act verbs. Whether one can insert the postposition sig 'like' between a verb with the suffix -mar/-mer and the following verb is determined by the actor and evidentiality. Whether a verb with the suffix -mar/-mer can take a voice or aspect suffix depends on the type of verb, as follows: The verb suffix -mar/-mer means hope or desirability when used with a first-person subject and spontaneity, possibility, situational description, hyperbole, or metaphor regardless of the subject. | |||||||||
