As we previously demonstrated, the expression of Shaker-type Kv channels (Kv 1.2, Kv 1.4, and Kv 1.5) was affected by the T 3 or PTU treatment in the atrium and ventricle equally. In contrast, the present study showed apparent induction of mRNA expression of erg and minK Kv channels in the atrium but not in the ventricle by the T 3 treatment. The increase of erg and minK Kv channels may shorten the duration of action potential and the wave length (=refractory period x conduction velocity) in the atrium, providing the arrhythmogenic basis for development of atrial fibrillation.
