The accent is placed on the formation of subepithelial immune deposits and involvement of cationic antigens. Recent data are presented on the role of histones in human and experimental lupus nephritis; this type of polycation could play a key role in the induction of glomerular injury and throw new light on the conundrum of lupus nephritis and DNA. In spite of intensive efforts a nephritogenic antigen from an infectious agent has not yet been identified with certainty.
