For this reason, measurement and evaluation of the transmission error of hypoid gears are desirable. The authors have already proposed a method for cutting hypoid gears with modified tooth surface in which the transmission error is controllable to some degree. In this study, the static transmission error of the hypoid gears is measured under a lightly loaded condition. Two autocollimators which measure the exact angular positions of the ring gear and pinion are employed. The transmission error is obtained from the measured angular positions. As a result, the transmission errors caused by blade runout during pinion generation and by nonconjugation owing to the tooth surface modification were measured and confirmed clearly.
