In order to examine whether this idea is correct or not, the present experiments were performed. We used pure tones, AM (amplitude modulated) bands of noise, FM (frequency modulated) bands of noise and several kinds of periodically fluctuating sounds for the stimuli. These fluctuating sounds had similar spectral patterns but different wave envelopes each other. Some band of noise receivers showed the similar response to the sawtooth AM tone with fast-rising-slow-falling envelope and that with slow-rising-fast-falling envelope. Some other band of noise receivers showed the different responses to these two stimuli. Therefore, the response of the band of noise receiver was dependent not noly on the spectrum but also on the wave envelope. We found several neurons whose effective range of center frequency was extremely narrow for AM bands of noise. And the effective range of center frequency of these neurons for FM bands was of two separate patches at the both sides of effective range for AM bands. The results suggested the mechanism that the lower level neuron, which fed an input to the neuron observed, was excited when the stimuli crossed the boundary between inhibitory and excitatory areas.
