The peak latencies of P9 (9.4±0.7 ms) (mean±S.D), P13 (13.1±0.9 ms), N22 (21.0±2.1 ms) of ppSEP coincided with those of P1 (9.4±0.7 ms), N1 (13.0±0.8 ms), P2 (22.2±3.9 ms) of the Seg-SCP, respectively. The ppSEP with a reference electrode on the dorsal neck skin surface could be recorded most clearly as compared to those with reference electrodes at the earlobe or hand dorsum. The effect of isoflurane on the ppSEP was similar that of the Seg-SCP. The threshold and maximal stimulus intensity were also similar between the ppSEP and Seg-SCP. Thus, the origins of the P9, P13 and N22 components of ppSEP were thought to be the same to those of the P1, N1 and P2 of Seg-SCP, respectively. The results therefore suggest that the P9, P13 and N22 of the ppSEP reflect the incoming volleys through the roots, synchronized activities of the interneurons and primary afferent depolarization (PAD), respectively.
