内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to clarify the historical evolution of the modality adverb "yomoya". In this paper, I have collected and examined examples of the usages of "yomoya" from the Muromachi period to the present day from the perspective of changes in the form of sentence endings that co-occur with "yomoya", changes in meaning, and changes in the genre in which it is used. It was found that the transition of the sentence-final form co-occurring with "yomoya" is related to the transition of its meaning, and that the meaning of "yomoya" indicates "unexpected" while "yomoya - I didn't think that" is fixed as time goes by. In the Edo period, "yomoya" was used in many conversational texts in Ukiyo zoshi and joruri, and was recognized as a "spoken" word. From the Meiji-Taisho period, the emergence of the restrictive modification usage and its extensive use in descriptive sentences have also led to a shift away from the "spoken" form of "yomoya". Even in the Diet, where it is used as a "spoken word", "yomoya" is used only in a limited way as an expression to reproach others in a polite tone, and its use is thought to have been narrowed from the usage in the Edo period. | |||||||||
