Present evidence suggests that some patients with paraneoplastic syndromes harbor autoantibodies in the serum and CSF that reacts with neuronal elements as well as with tumors. Certain of the auto-antibodies are sufficiently specific so that their presence in a patient with or without a paraneoplastic syndrome strongly suggests the presence of an underlying cancer. There is at least some evidence from lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) that the auto-antibodies may play a role in producing the paraneoplastic syndrome by reacting with neural antigens and interfering with function of the neural structure. The presence of auto-antibodies may serve to retard the growth of the underlying tumor even while it may destroy portions of the nervous system. We demonstrate a major 58 kD protein antigen in an immunoblot of human cerebellum by serum from a patient with paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration (PCD). To identify the details of the target antigens, we isolated a cDNA clone from a human cerebellar library by immunoscreening using patient\u0027s serum.
