In this study, middle-school science lessons that promote student attitudes toward education for sustainable development (ESD) were developed and implemented. Survey was administered first to measure college students' attitudes toward ESD. Lesson plans for the unit of chemical reaction in middle-school science were developed next to help students acquire abilities and attitudes that are important for supporting sustainable development. The lessons incorporate instructional strategies such as the use of information cards and the construction of an ESD map to help students make decisions on controversial issues. The results indicate that the lesson plans helped students become more aware of the importance of perspectives based on ESD.
