GGTは, GGIsを主体とするタウ陽性構造の出現分布と中枢神経組織の変性部位から，3つのサブタイプに分けられている．それらは臨床症状に対応し，前頭側頭葉主体の病変分布を取り前頭側頭型認知症を呈するType I,運動野と錐体路を主体とし運動ニューロン徴候を呈するType II, そしてType IとIIの複合型であるType IIIの3タイプである．しかし，こうしたサブタイプについては未だ確立されたものではない．そこで本研究では, GGT Type III 3例とType II 2例を対象とし，サブタイプ間の特徴について検討した．特にGAIsとNCIsの形態に着目して, GGIsの定量解析，共焦点顕微鏡を用いた三次元構造解析，電子顕微鏡像による超微形態観察を行い，サブタイプ間で比較検討した．GGIsの定量解析では, GAIsの出現量はType IIに比べType IIIで顕著に多かった．三次元構造解析では, GAIsの形態がType間で異なることを示した．すなわち, Type IIのGAIsは，小型で多数の小球状構造からなり，アストロサイトの突起遠位にまで広がっていた．一方, Type IIIのGAIsは大型で少数の小球状構造が胞体近位部に形成され，直径もType IIより小さい傾向を示した．これらの形態的特徴の違いから, GAIsの形成過程が異なっている可能性が示唆された. NCIsには, 3つの特徴的形態：即ち(1)Diffuse granular,(2)Thick cord-like,(3)Round/horseshoe-shaped NCIsを観察した. Thick cord-like NCIsはType II, Type IIIの両者で認めた.
