 note = {This paper points to some of the hitherto neglected semantic and pragmatic aspects of the I hate to say X construction. We have extensively discussed that the referential expression "it" or "this" shown in the X of the I hate to say X construction is selected to convey information that has previously been established but unknown to the hearer. We have also tried to clarify the mechanisms which control the choice of either “I hate to say it," “I hate to say this," or “I hate to say that." The semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the I hate to say X construction that this paper hypothesizes have been borne out by observing naturally occurring data.},
