What makes SOGO SHOSHA unique is not only their immense scale, extensive operations scope and diverse commodities, but also their special functions. While drawing upon previous literature on the subject as background and context, this paper tries to explore the change of the core function of SOGO SHOSHA based on an analysis of its financial structure. The current five big trading companies are chosen as the primary object of research. The focus of this study is primarily drawn on the analysis of financial statements of these five companies from the so-called collapse of the "bubble economy" period during the 1990s.
