It runs through the Khabarovsky krai, and supplies people and living things near by with water. A long time has passed since the river pollution has been heard of; the problems caused by it have been found and recognized clearly by many citizens. However, in time, the condition of the river became worse, and it was obvious that the situation had to be changed. On November 13 2005, a catastrophe in Jilin, China occurred. It brought about 100 tons of toxic chemicals to the Songhua River, which flows into the Amur River. It caused transboundary river pollution. After that event, many projects for co-operation between Russia and China were opened, including the Amur monitoring. Nowadays, 4 years after the event, official control systems for the examination of the Amur River water works normally. Citizens can obtain part of the basic information about the condition of the Amur River water through the internet site of the Khabarovsky krai governmental office. It shows that the water condition is in order.
