The frequent modern usage of the word kireida has subtle\\ndifferences from utsukushii; therefore, the two words are often compared as synonyms.This study will focus on the words utsukushii and kireida, in order to clarify the functional distinction of these two words.The scope of the investigation is centered on the Meiji period and the Taisho period.This essay is a quantitative study of utsukushii and kireida in the Meiji period as the basics of consideration.The conclusion is that\\nkireida is used much more by authors such as Natsume Souseki.
