Japanese verb-verb compounds may be divided into two types, lexical and syntactic compounds, according to grammatical and semantic criteria. This paper shows that Chinese verb-verb compounds can also be classified into lexical and syntactic compounds, by application of the following tests. First, lexical compounds must be negated as a whole whereas only the second verb of syntactic compounds can be negated. Secondly, unlike the case of lexical compounds, an adverb can modify only the second verb of a syntactic compound.
