 note = {This paper analyzes the ethical theories which was read by the young Mao Zedong. This study focuses on System der Ethik which was written by Friedrich Paulsen and is about western philosophy. Mao noted in the margins various annotations as his own opinion. To analyze those annotations is useful for knowing what the young Mao thought. The purpose of this paper is to figure out what he read about modern western philosophy from Paulsen. This paper attempts to take up chapter 7 of System der Ethik, which is referred to as “virtue and happiness”, and analyzes how he took new worth as a moralistic theme. This study shows that Mao has agreed to most of the new philosophic ideas from Paulsen. He could perhaps take some cues from System der Ethik to reconsider his own opinions about domestic issues in China.},
