James Yen, known as a global civilian educationalist, once worked for an anti-illiteracy campaign in the battlefield during World War I; this is considered to be the origin of the civilian education movement in China. After returning to China in 1920, as a co-founder of the Association for Promoting Mass Education, he thrust himself vigorously into civilian education and rural construction; however, after he emigrated in 1949, his thoughts and personal characteristics were both criticized unfairly, and he was not mentioned in public discourse for half a century. In 1985, 36 years later, he returned to his homeland, and his study began to gain popularity. Prior to this, his perspectives had already been extensively researched in Japan. Based on the research of Yen's thoughts, this article emphasizes the significant influence of his principles on civilian education and rural construction. This article also contributes further discussion on the enlightenment of rural construction development in modern China, and analyzes the limitations of Yen's principles.}, pages = {1--17}, title = {晏陽初の平民教育思想と郷村建設運動 : 河北省定県の教育実践を中心として}, volume = {66}, year = {2018} }
