Acid output was decreased in a dose-dependent fashion 3 min after a glucose injection into the intra- and extrahepatic portal vein in the intact liver. The acid decrease was blocked by hepatic branch vagotomy. The aci dresponse induced by the extrahepatic portal injection of glucose was not influenced by lidocaine anesthesia of the extrahepatic portal walls, but was diminished by a 40% hepatectomy, and completely blocked by a 66% hepatectomy. Hepatic branch splanchnicotomy failed to modify the acid response. Plasma glucose levels before and after the portal glucose injection and liver functional parameters in the blood under hepatectomy during the experiments were unchanged.
