The morphologies and particle sizes were analyzed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and showed surface morphology of unloaded TiO_2 and metal-loaded TiO_2 nanoparticles. The energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was used to confirm the presence of titanium, oxygen, and metal elements in nanoparticles. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed the anatase and rutile phases of TiO_2. The high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) showed that metal nanoparticles deposited on TiO_2 support. It was found that the nanoparticles synthesized by FSP showed spherical and platelet morphologies. For metal-loaded TiO_2 nanoparticles, very small metal nanoparticles were uniformly dispersed on the surface of larger TiO_2 particles. The formation of Ag–TiO_2 and Au–TiO_2 nanostructures was also confirmed by UV–vis absorption spectroscopy. The UV-vis absorption spectra of unloaded and 0.5 mol%–3.0 mol% Au–TiO_2 and Ag–TiO_2 films were examined in ethanol. Peaks attributable to Au and Ag NPs appear at approximately 540 and 420 nm, respectively, and their intensity increases as more Au or Ag was loaded onto TiO_2 NPs. This result indicated the excitation of localized SPs on the Au-and Ag-loaded TiO_2 NPs. The multiple plasmonic effect on the photocurrent properties of photoanodes containing Ag or Au nanoparticles (NPs) loaded onto titanium dioxide film (Ag–TiO_2 or Au–TiO_2) on Au grating surfaces was demonstrated. The Ag– or Au–TiO_2 composite NPs were deposited by spin coating onto the Au grating surfaces. The photoanode electrode was a layered structure of blu-ray disc-recordable grating substrate/Au/Ag (or Au)–TiO_2/dye/electrolyte/indium-tin oxide. The plasmonic effect was induced when Ag or Au NPs were located within the propagating surface plasmon (SP) field on the Au grating surface.
