A layer of Y_2O_3・Nb_2O_5 formed at the Y_2O_3-Nb_2O_5 interface, of which growth was controlled by the one-way diffusion of Nb_2O_5 across the product layer. The apparent activation energies of the diffusion for 70% and 95% dense Y_2O_3 are 150 and 200 kcal/mol, respectively. EPMA of 1350℃-specimen showed the concentration gradient of Nb across the reaction layer ranging from 50 to 55 mol% of Nb_2O_5 increasing towards the Y_2O_3・Nb_2O_5-Nb_2O_5 interface.
