Instructional strategies that were implemented in the lessons were 1) use of models, and 2) use of hint cards. Student discussions were analyzed based on the framework of deep approach to learning in two dimensions: cognitive thinking operation and conceptual understanding. The results indicate that the use of models was difficult because of the highly abstract nature of the activity.
