As the first step of the geologic study on this terrane, the Keta Formation is described and discussed. The Keta Formation is distributed in the southern part of the Middle Chichibu Terrane. This formation consists mainly of mudstone and sandstone associated with a small amount of acidic tuff and lacks exotic blocks entirely. This formation is 250m+ in. thickness and is divided into sandstone-rich lower member and mudstone-rich upper one. The Keta Formation forms a homoclinal structure moderately or steeply dipping north and generally striking E-W and is in fault contact with the adjacent strata. Radiolarian fossils occur from various horizons of the upper member, which is assigned to the uppermost part of Tricolocapsa plicarum Zone, namely, to middle Middle Jurassic. Judging from differences in litho-facies, in degree of disturbance and in age between the Keta Formation and the surrounding older strata, it is inferred that the Keta Formation originally rested unconformably upon them. On the basis of radiolarian biostratigraphy, the Keta Formation is regarded as contemporaneous with the following stratigraphic units of the Togano Group in the Southern Chichibu Terrane from north to south; coarse clastics layer of the Ogawa belt, siliceous mudstone layer of the Kobiura belt and the Nishiyama belt-I, chert layer of the Nishiyama belt-II and -III.
