To ensure the safety of train operation, it is important to take adequate measures, such as suspension of train operation and circuit inspection of slope conditions, according to the amount of snowmelt. In this study,, the applicability of the degree-day method to estimation of the daily amount of snowmelt was discussed on the basis of data obtained from snowmelt observations at Ginzan in Hokkaido, Kurosawa in Akita Prefecture and Shiozawa in Niigata Prefecture. Consequently, the mean value between the mean air temperature of a given day and that of the previous day was found to be more suitable than that of the given day alone as a temperature used to estimate the daily snowmelt amount of the given day. It was indicated that the degree-day factor tended to become larger with the course of time. Therefore, a method was proposed to determine the appropriate degree-day factor by giving the first date when continuous snowmelt occurs.
