 note = {A new subject titled above began from the school year 1997. Its beginning, scheme and practices are described, opinions of the enrolled students are shown, and issues to be overcome are discussed. This subject was opened to promote students' interests in solid wastes' issues in our campus as well as in our society, based on "The Declaration of Wastes' Reduction and Their Recycling in Niigata University" issued in 1995. The lecture included the sources and destinations of drinking water, wastewater and solid wastes in campus and Japan. Ecosystem, deforestation, measures for recycling, and production using eco-materials were also explained. A visit to six wastes' producing or dumping points in and near the campus and a half day tour to a waste incineration plant, a waste dumping site or a wastes' recycling promotion center of Niigata City were requested to the students. In 1998, 264 students were enrolled in the class and 61% of it took part in the half day tour. In 1997, 71.1% of the students passed the final examination. This subject gained high interests and evaluation of the students enrolled, because the contents of it were so different from those of orthodox subjects such as languages and natural sciences, closely related to students' lives, and not known by them.},
