All elderly people over 75 years of age living alone without receiving any health, or welfare benefits participated. An initial survey and a one-year follow-up study were conducted. The survey inquired about basic attributes, life functions, the frequency of social exchanges, social support, self-rated health, and life satisfaction. In the first survey, 3.9% of participants satisfied conditions for social isolation (isolated group). Furthermore, 4.1% of non-isolated elderly people sampled in the first survey underwent a transition to isolated (transitional group) in the second survey. Compared to the non-transitional group, a higher percentage of the transitional group had fewer social roles, a lower frequency of non-face-to-face interactions with family members, and no one to care for them when they were sick in bed.
