As a low-background liquid scintillation spectrometer (Aloka's LSC-LB1) has been installed in our laboratory, some fundamental experiments have been performed prior to the measurements of environmental tritium. Results obtained are as follows: i) The background counting rate can be lowered by the measurements of sample vials under a nitrogen atmosphere (Figs. 1 and 2). It indicates that a part of the background counting rate consists of light emission based on alpha-decays of Rn-daughters in the air. ii) When the counting of a background water sample was successively repeated, the background counting rates obviously fluctuated with time, giving the highest background value immediately after the beginning of the measurement (Fig. 2). It was found that the measurement of background samples should be frequently required to obtain an practical measurements with a high degree of accuracy. iii) A teflon vial of 100ml can load easily an electrostatic charge by the friction due to surrounding air during the operation of a sample change. Although the electrostatic charge of a vial certainly causes the anomalous counts, it was also confirmed the influence can be reduced by the use of an antistatic agent for the vial (Figs. 2, 3 and 4). iv) The measurement of the external standard channel ratio (abbreviated to ESCR) was successively repeated.
