In case that an earthquake occurs at the place where heavy snow deposits, it is dangerous to pass the way which abuts on steep slopes beside. However, there are not so much studies on the effect of the earthquake on a snow pack on a slope. We studied the effect of the earthquake on the small avalanche by stability analysis. Before that earthquake, the snow pack which fell down as an avalanche was supported by the frictional force and the tensile force against its own weight under the gravitational force. When the earthquake shakes the snow pack, the external force, which is up to 46 percent of the gravitational force to the direction parallel to the slope, added to it. And the frictional force could reduce about 35 percent because of the external force to the direction perpendicular to the slope. As a result it is revealed that the snow pack supported by frictional force and tensile force was stable. However, external force by the earthquake was large enough to trigger the small avalanche.}, pages = {9--15}, title = {2001年1月4日新潟県中里村で発生した地震による雪崩}, volume = {23}, year = {2001} }
