The relationship between serum antibody levels to P. gingivalis and P. gingivalis-specific antibody secreting cells present in the local lesion was also examined. The major isotype of total immunoglobulin spot forming cells (SFC) in the local lesion was IgG, followed by IgM and IgA. Antibody-secreting cells specific for P. gingivalis were observed at frequencies of 16.0, 8.4, and 5.40% for total IgG, IgM and IgA, respectively. According to serum IgG antibody levels to P. gingivalis, we divided patients into two groups ; high (H group) and low titer groups (L group).In H group, the IgG anti-P. gingivalis antibody level was significantly higher than in L group. But other isotypes antibody to P. gingivalis and other periodontitis-associated bacteria-specific antibody levels did not differ between two groups. P. gingivalis was more frequently detected in H than L group. Total bacterial counts were also much higher in H group. The numbers of IgG P. gingivalis –specific SFC in H group showed a significant increment. Furthermore, polyclonal B cell response of IgG isotype in H group was augmented. IgG serum antibody levels to P. gingivalis were well-correlated with IgG SFC specific for P. gingivalis These findings suggested that serum antibody levels to P. gingivalis could reflect local immune response.
