The response of the jaw closing muscles by mechanical stimulations to the implants was studied in man as compared with the tonic periodontal jaw closing muscle reflex of the adjacent natural teeth. So the pressure thresholds of the implants and the adjacent naturalent natural examined. The findings were obtained as follows : 1. There was pressure sensibility in man with the bioactive endosseous denta limplant. But the pressure thresholds of the implants were much higher than those of the adjacent natural teeth. 2. The pressure thresholds of the implants could be measured at 1 day after implantation, and then decreased continually till 7~8 weeks after implantation, since then the pressure thresholds were held constant. 3. The pressure thresholds of the implants after the function of occlusion showed a tendency to decrease. 4. Under anesthesia at the gingival around the implants, the pressure thresholds of the implants increased in all cases, in succession with bone anesthetized, these increased still more. 5. The axial mechanical stimulation to the implants evoked not only the tonic excitatory reflex but also the tonic inhibitory reflex of the jaw closing muscles like the tonic periodontal jaw closing muscle reflex of the natural teeth. 6. And the reflex responses of the implants were occurred depending upon the state of the background activity of the jaw closing muscles.
