The results were as follows: 1. The total number of patients was 659 which consisted of 381 males (57.8%) and 278 females (42.2%) with a peak in the third decade in the age distribution. 2. Thirty five patients (5.2%) were brought to our hospital by ambulance. 3. Patients living in Nagano city accounted for 76.9% of the population. 4. The patients visited us most often in August and December, on Saturday and Sunday and between 18 and 21 o'clock. 5. The use of emergency room was the first experience for 539 patients (80.8%). 6. Sixty three patients (9.4%) were referred to us, mostly from dental clinics. 7. Pain seen in 295 patients (44.2%) was the most frequently encountered chief complaint. 8. Soft tissue injuries were seen in 141 patients (21.1%). Including jaw bone fractures, trauma accounted for 43.6% of the diagnoses. 9. Forty patients were hospitalized. With the increase of emergency patients in our hospital, the rate of patients requiring oral surgical treatment has increased.
