Additionally, preclinical simulations using mannequins provide students with valuable experience, in the application of state-of-the-art clinical equipment. Here, in our laboratories, We constructed a computerized system that simultaneously provides a graphic analysis of the operator's position, determines the exact speed at which the bur is rotating and monitors the operation of the root-canal cleansing apparatus. Students gauge their own progress, during numerous practice-sessions. We applied our device to the task of evaluating the cavity, by visualizing it with computer graphics, as a three-dimensional image. At the completion of the training period, we asked the students to judge both course-content and the device itself, describing in detail, what they felt to be their strong, as well as weak points. We were greatly gratified by their responses, as the students expressed great overall satisfaction with the class, as well as enthusiasm for, and personal interest in the device, noting especially, how they could use it with little or no supervision from instructors. But, it was also acknowledged that there was ample room for improvement, with regard to cavity-evaluation.
