Influenza A (H1N1) epidemics moderate in scale were experienced in the five winters (1978～1981and 1984). A (H3N2) virus was not superseded by the newly appeared A (H1N1) virus in 1978, resulting in A (H3N2) epidemics small in scale in 1978 and 1980, and furthermore moderate in scale in 1983 and 1985. B epidemics were also experienced in 1980 at which A (H1N1and H3N2) epidemics were reported. Thereafter, B epidemics moderate in scale were experienced in 1982 and 1985. Characteristically, although the number of isolates was small, B viruses were always isolated in the pretracted epidemic season, showing an accurate indication of predictions for occuring of B epidemic in the next epidemic season. The isolates of either influenza virus types (or subtypes) successively showed more intense antigenic drift toward the recent epidemics.
