It was classified into two stages: the early stage revieling pulmonary edema or hemorrhage and the late stage revieling interstitial pneumonia or pulmonary fibrosis. These changes seem to take an irreversible progression. The patients who took low dose of paraquat and showed low plasma concentration of it, had a rather good course. PaO_2 and D_<LCO> decreased temporarily even if the damage did not present clinical manifestations. The purpose of treatment for paraquat lung is to excrete paraquat compulsively out of body as early as possible. There are two procedures available for this purpose, namely intestinal, lavage and direct hemoperfusion. It seems to be better to do these treatments more frequently and longer than in conventional usage, because paraquat has a tendency to remain in the organs for a long time and to be released slowly into the blood. Furthermore, the dosage of steroid has to be increased during the extracorporal circulation for prevension of acute pulmonary edema as well as late interstitial fibrosis.
