Nine cases were diagnosed clinicopathologically and 4 cases clinically. Incidence by sex was 3 males and 10 females, and age of onset ranged from 25 to 81 years old. During the surveylance of 25 years, the incidence was markedly high in the recent 4 years (1986～1989) giving 9 cases, as compared with 4 cases in the past 21 years (1965～1985). When based on the population of 2.469 million in Niigata Prefecture (April 1, 1988), this recent 4 year incidence accounted for a minimal annual incidence rate of 0.40～1.21 (mean 0.91) and a minimal annual prevalence rate of 0.81～2.43 (mean 1.92) per million, each. This recent high incidence may depend partly on increasing interest of physicians in the disease and partly on advancing diagnostics with CT and MRI, that capable of ruling out alike diseases manifesting similar clinical symptoms but distinct tissue alterations. For the geographical distribution of the disease, Shibata City, a local town in the northeaset area of Niigata Prefecture, proved a hot spot, where 3 cases were confirmed in less than 3 years of December 1986 to June 1989; however, neither familiar nor etiological correlation was found among these cases, though one case, a 25-year-old patient, was suspected to be caused by a contaminated dura matter.
