The main reason of the changes of the environment resulted from the change in dietary habits and trend towards aged society. The number of operated patients with gastric cancer increased from 1273 to 2476 in 15 years （1972～1987） in Niigata Prefecture. And those with early gastric cancer increased from 138 to 1100 in same period. The increase of operated patients with gastric cancer resulted from two factors, which were the increase of aged patients with gastric cancer and of patients with early gastric cancer. It was caused by progress of diagnostic technique and instrument. The magnification of operable indication should be one of the reason which increased the number of operated aged patients with gastric cancer. The number of operated patients with breast cancer incresed from 216 to 461 in 15 years （1972～1987） in Niigata Prefecture. And the breast cancers in stage I were increasing in recent years. Hereafter, an increase of the number of operated patients with lung cancer, colon cancer, breast cancer, cancer of the biliary tract, esophageal cancer and hepatoma was expected.
