At 7 and 14 days after injury, the newly formed vessels at the border of the lesion demonstraed tortuousness, nodular protrusions and anastomoses which were also seen in the active stage of the vascularization of developing fetal rat brain. At 21 days, these feature could hardly be observed and smoothly running microvessels appeared. At 28 days, the microvascular architecture was completely reconstructed, but there were decreased numbers of capillaries and narrowing of them in the marginal zone. The BrdU labeling index of endothelial cells was elevated from 2 days after injury and reached a peak of 2.0% at 7 days after injury. Labeled endothelial cells disappeared 14 days later. It was suspected that changes in the microvascular architecture were closely related to the proliferation of endothelial cells.
