The speech-specific effects of cleft palate perceived by patients were as follows: 1) need for day-to-day ambulatory therapy, 2) no recognition of the specificity of their speech, 3) shock and confusion relating to the specificity of their speech, 4) experience of bullying and opposition faced by their parents, 5) recognition of the specificity of their speech and conflicts regarding the differences from the speech of others, 6) family support and recognition, 7) acceptance of the specificity of their speech, 8) self-confidence, 9) trust in the care provided by medical professionals, and 10) acceptance of treatment benefits.
