 note = {This study examines the effectiveness of students' free exploration and the use of drawings in elementary science lessons to promote students having perspectives toward solving the scientific problem. Free exploration was included in one of the 3rd grade lessons of sound (N=65). Students were asked to record their observations and thinking about sound-making materials on their work sheet using verbal expressions and drawings. The results indicate that free exploration helped students have perspectives toward problem solving based on evidence. The use of drawings also is shown to be useful in accessing student thinking.},
