The outpatients were divided into two groups: those treated in the first term (2005-2007), when there was only 1 full-time doctor specialized in oral and maxillofacial surgery, and those treated in the second term (2008-2010), when there were 2 full-time doctors. The average number of patients per year was 1694; male-to-female ratio was 1:1.36 and mean age was 48.0 years. The number and ratio of newly referred patients were significantly higher in the second term group than in the first term group. In the second term, the number of referred patients living in regions southwest and northeast of Minami-uonuma City significantly increased, while the number of referred patients living in Minami-uonuma City significantly decreased. Dentists who work in a hospital are required to have not only the ability for systematic management of medically compromised patients but also knowledge and experience of oral surgical techniques.
