Japanese postpositional phrases are more flexible in terms of syntactic structure. In contrast, Chinese prepositional phrases are placed between the subject and the verb. When a prepositional phrase is placed before the subject, a pause must be placed after the prepositional phrase. When taking a clause as a topic, Japanese simply uses the topic particle wa after a postpositional phrase, whereas Chinese uses an adnominal clause and a noun.
