 note = {What can teachers do to support students' autonomous learning of foreign languages in a situation where cross-border mobility is restricted? In this paper, we will discuss our observations of oral communications between learners and native speakers of the target language (L2) in so-called 'foreign language chats', a program, which has been going on since 2012 as an extracurricular activity at Niigata University. We will further analyse how we have developed this as an online activity, documenting its history and progress, in investigating the reactions of student participants. As studying abroad is still an important factor in motivating students to learn a foreign language, even if the total number of participants decreases due to difficult circumstances like the current pandemic, the authors found that continuing this activity online still has a lot of significance.},
