The functional load principle predicts that high functional load phonemic contrasts will be more difficult to adjust into more intelligible variants during an interaction than low functional load phonemic contrasts. The L1 background principle, on the other hand, predicts that L2 phonemic contrasts that can be conflated with L1 phonemes will be more difficult to adjust into more intelligible variants during an interaction. Eleven Chinese-Japanese dyads participated in this experiment, which required them to complete four tests in which they had to adjust phonemic contrasts into more intelligible variants. Each test contained some combination of high and low functional load phonemic contrasts as well as problematic and non-problematic phonemic contrasts. This study hypothesized that the phonemic contrasts that were both high functional load phonemic contrasts and problematic for L2 English speakers from a Chinese or Japanese L1 background would be the most resistant to adjustment into more intelligible variants. The results offer tentative evidence for some of the hypotheses and suggest that interaction's positive effects on intelligibility operate differently among different kinds of phonemic contrasts.","subitem_description_language":"en","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_7_publisher_7":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"新潟大学大学院現代社会文化研究科「言語の普遍性と個別性」プロジェクト","subitem_publisher_language":"ja"}]},"item_7_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12464660","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_7_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"1884-863X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"PISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"open access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_abf2"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"O'Neal, George","creatorNameLang":"en"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Latham, Lance","creatorNameLang":"en"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_access","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2021-11-02"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"12_1-22.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"861KB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"objectType":"fulltext","url":"https://niigata-u.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/2000048/files/12_1-22.pdf"},"version_id":"fc728e03-5f8d-4448-8d97-0227f7a4bf86"}]},"item_keyword":{"attribute_name":"キーワード","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_subject":"Functional Load","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Intelligibility","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"Accommodation","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"},{"subitem_subject":"L2 Pronunciation","subitem_subject_language":"en","subitem_subject_scheme":"Other"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"The Efficacy of the Functional Load and L1 Background Principles’Predictions of the Development of Mutual Intelligibility during Interaction","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"The Efficacy of the Functional Load and L1 Background Principles’Predictions of the Development of Mutual Intelligibility during Interaction","subitem_title_language":"en"}]},"item_type_id":"7","owner":"1","path":["456","1635826740261"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"PubDate","attribute_value":"2021-11-02"},"publish_date":"2021-11-02","publish_status":"0","recid":"2000048","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["The Efficacy of the Functional Load and L1 Background Principles’Predictions of the Development of Mutual Intelligibility during Interaction"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2022-12-15T04:33:18.816774+00:00"}
