They were divided into elderly (age 60 or more, n=189) and younger (age less than 60, n=315) groups. One hundred fifty nine patients had no or less than 50% coronary stenosis, 42 had 50 to 74% stenosis, and 303 had significant (75% or more) stenosis. The prevalence of multivessel disease was higher in the elderly than in the younger group. Left ventricular ejection fraction (EF) did not differ between the 2 age groups. More patients with 3 vessel disease had severely depressed EF than the others. Prevalence of hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes mellitus and smoking habit did not differ between the 2 age groups. More patients in the elderly group, however, had no or only one risk factor. Among 303 with significant stenosis, 42 (23%) of 180 in the younger group and 40 (33%) of 123 in the elderly group underwent coronary artery surgery. Four patients from each group died. Only one of 18, however, died among those with age 65 or older. PTCA, which was performed on 36 patients, was unsuccessful in 5 with multivessel disease in the elderly group. In conclusion, elderly patients had high prevalence of multivessel disease despite less risk factors.
