The macrophages are characterized by rich existence of large phagosomes which contain cellular elements. Morphological observation shows that effete enterocytes are not simply exfoliated into the lumen but phagocytosed by the subepithelial macrophages. The epithelium of the villus tips is infiltrated with numerous large granular lymphocytes. The cytotoxic lymphocytes with an intense perforin immunoreactivity are actively interdigitated with apoptotic enterocytes, suggesting the lymphocyte-mediated cell death. In the rat and mouse, no aggregation of phagocytotic macrophages is found in the lamina propria of villus tips. The enterocytes undergoing apoptosis are exfoliated as total, nucleus-containing cells into the lumen. Ultrastructural and cytochemical studies suggest that in the rat and mouse, lamina propria macrophages rather than intraepithelial lymphocytes are involved in cell death of enterocytes. In the human, the aggregation of macrophages is observed in the large intestine, especially the rectum. The intimate relationship between the lamina propria macrophages and the ulcerative colitis is shown experimentally and clinically.}, pages = {167--172}, title = {腸上皮細胞の細胞死(アポトーシス)に関わるマクロファージと上皮内リンパ球}, volume = {108}, year = {1994} }
