The results were as follows. 1) The intima-media thickness (IMT) in the main trunk and bifurcation-bulb area of bilateral carotid arteries was measured in 122 males of a community. Atherosclerotic lesions (AL) were defined by IMT as being 1.5 mm or more. 2) The incidence of AL increased along with aging both in males and females. In those who were less than 65 years old, the incidence in males was 12.8 % (10/78) and that in females was 9.0 % (12/134). In those who were 65 years old or older, the incidence in males was 31.8 % (14/44) and that in females was 26.9 % (29/109). 3) The incidence of AL in the cases with coronary artery disease (CAD) and cerebral infarction (CI) was higher than that in community people. The odds ratio of CAD associated wiht AL, corrected by risk factors of atherosclerosis using logistic regression analysis, was 5.8 and that of CI was 6.3. 4) High age and low HDL cholesterol emerged as significant factors related to AL. Male and history of hypertension were probably related to AL, too.
