Many protocols, using many and high dose cytotoxic drugs, enabled many children to survive. It is now estimated that by the year 2000 one in a thousand 20-year olds will be a survivor of childhood cancer. However, late effects of chemotherapy, including growth failure, cardiac function, hearing impairment, fertility, lung toxicity, neuropsychological sequalae, and secondary cancer have become serious problems among these survivors.
