The emergency department handles about 12,700 visits per year (35 per day) and acts as a triage point for all medical and surgical emergencies. The emergency and critical care departments work together and comprises six beds. Kanazawa University Hospital has paid attention to postgraduate training in the emergency and critical care departments and started the training programs since 1987. However, the specialty of emergency medicine is still in a rudimentary stage of development. The problems are many, including personnel issues, educational opportunities, the lack of necessary infrastructure.
