Bcl11b^マウスでは胸腺細胞の分化停止が生じる. 胸腺細胞の分化停止は, 多くの他の遺伝子ノックアウトマウスの実験でも報告されているが, それらの遺伝子には Wnt/β-catenin シグナルに関わる遺伝子も含まれる. ヒトのT細胞性白血病においても, Bcl11b遺伝子座の変異が確認されている. しかし, その変異がどのようにしてリンパ腫の発生に関与しているかは明らかでない. この機構を解明するためにマウスにγ線照射を行い, Bcl11b^遺伝子型が胸腺細胞の増殖や分化にどのような影響を与えるのかを検討した. TCRβ鎖のD-J組み換えアッセイとフローサイトメトリーによる解析の結果から, γ線照射後の萎縮胸腺には, 2種類の異なる性質をもつクローナル増殖細胞が存在することが明らかになった. 1つはクローナル増殖をしながらも, 胸腺細胞の分化能を保持している細胞であり, もう1つはクローナル増殖し, かつ胸腺細胞の分化が停止している細胞である. 前者の胸腺細胞は自己複製能と細胞分化能をもつことから, がん幹細胞との関連が考えられる. さらに, Bcl11b^マウスの胸腺細胞において,がん遺伝子として知られるβ-cateninの発現が高いことが確認された.
